Profile - An Overview

It has taken us 15 years to develop the perfect balance for a romantic, private & secluded weekend experience

A 'turn-of-the-century' guest farm catering to the romantic, nostalgic and distinguished folk who recognise weekend breakaways are important to establish a lifestyle balance

The Feathered Nest is a privately owned and run guest farm. Much pride and care has been taken in the acquisition and restoration of this original late 1800's farmhouse, with wooden floors and pressed metal ceilings surrounded by 120 hectares of unspoiled land, with a river bisecting bushveld and grasslands.

Aptly named The Feathered Nest, we focus on birding, as well as the provision of cozy accommodation to those honeymooners, couples or families (by special arrangement) wanting the ideal private break-away in celebration of an occasion or just to get some space and sanity away from the rat race.

Being a privately owned and run estate, we specialise in attention to detail for special occasions, because there is only one opportunity to celebrate your 10th wedding anniversary (your 25th, or any other anniversary for that matter); your honeymoon, birthday or any special occasion. It has to be right - first time.

Country Gourmet Meals, with a twist

Our gourmet meals are "almost famous" as this is one of the areas we pay close attention to. When you make your booking, the questions asked at the time will assist us in establishing what your allergies, dislikes and special dietary requirements may be. For example: vegetarian, banting, lactose intolerant. Your meal is then created around this information.

Personalised Service with Emphasis on Privacy

Our specialty: Being a privately owned establishment, this is our hallmark. As we cater for small groups or families we can focus on PERSONALISED SERVICE and hence make it most pleasurable. Our suites are nestled amongst the trees and are spaced strategically to allow for total privacy. The dining room is configured for comfortable, "un-crowded" dining.

Activities

Our focus is on relaxing in privacy and to this end bird watching and walking on the estate fit the bill

An alternative to walking is to take a guided quad bike ride around the farm, where you can see the farm from a totally different vantage point. These are automatic Quad bikes that are quiet, eco-friendly and easy to ride by both guys and gals - no previous experience needed. Certainly fun to get around on and a great experience.

Then, we also offer the service of booking ballooning trips and tree-top Canopy Tours to fill your day or to add to your adventure and trip at the end of your stay with us (all a manageable drive away). For the less energetic/adventurous we have bird watching and short trails for hiking on the farm.

Note:

Activities OFF THE FARM are the Hot Air Ballooning and Canopy Tours. We facilitate bookings as part of our service to you when booking your stay at The Feathered Nest.

The Feathered Nest - Booking Services

The Name

The Feathered Nest was chosen as a name for our farm as we are passionately involved in birding and have a large population on the farm itself. Together with our efforts to assist injured and maimed birds, we thought it apt to call the farm The Feathered Nest.

The Bird Sanctuary Centre

This is an ongoing project we have undertaken as a community service and a passion of ours to help nature cope with some of Man's mistakes and sometimes selfishness. We take in and rehabilitate injured birds in our 'sanctuary' and if they are able to be released this we undertake too. More often than not, we have to care for them and this takes time and funding. We call on funds from institutions and private persons alike - to build/sponsor aviaries and contribute to the purchase of food as well as assisting with the veterinary services/fees.

The Location

We are based just outside the main Rustenburg area, halfway between Rustenburg and Magaliesburg in the tranquil mountains at the tail end of the Magaliesberg range on a private estate on 120 hectares of prime land. Being just a 90 minute scenic drive from either Johannesburg or Pretoria, makes this an ideal break-away destination. Explicit directions are forwarded, once a booking has been secured.

The Climate

Situated in a transition zone combining the climates of the highveld, bushveld and semi-desert, our specific climate is somewhat eclectic. Ranging from hot summer days with afternoon thunderstorms and rain, to crisp dry winter days where early morning frost is a common visitor warming to midday temperatures that allow t-shirts as the norm. The climate is warm to tropical with summer temperatures averaging between 25°C and 35°C during the months of November to January, and the temperatures can rise to + 30°C. A "hot" day can be considered 38°C.

Our nights are comfortably warm. Winter evenings can be cold but our winters are rather short, starting in May ‘til August (where the colder months are June and July) and the winters are actually "eased into and out of". The average rainfall in the region is 550 ml per year, with the height of the rainy season being from January to March. The Feathered Nest is situated in a "non malaria" area.

Our winter season begins towards the end of April ’til September with September 1st being the official first day of spring. South Africa is blessed to have terrific weather most of the year round.
